The Freedom After My Battle With Crohn’s and Colitis
Rachel’s journey with inflammatory bowel disease was marked by pain and distress. Things took a positive turn, however, when she made the decision to undergo colostomy surgery.

Learn how Rachel transformed her health and revived a vibrant life she thought was lost forever
Rachel is 47 years old and lives in Dublin, Ireland. Her health struggles began shortly after the birth of her first daughter. She developed debilitating bowel issues, and was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in 2000. As her health deteriorated, Rachel had to give up activities she once loved, including sports and social outings, and became increasingly isolated. The last decade was particularly challenging, and she reached a point where she no longer wanted to leave her home.
A life-changing colostomy procedure
In 2021, after consulting with her health care professional, Rachel opted for colostomy surgery. The positive impact on her life was immediate. With renewed health, she found herself back at work as a first responder and once again became an integral part of her local community – volunteering as a children's coach for the local community center football (soccer) club.
Reflecting on her journey, Rachel emphasizes the importance of seeking support and encouragement from those who have walked a similar path. "Talk to people who have been through what you're going through, and hear their positive stories," she advises, acknowledging the strength that comes from shared experiences.
Having a stoma opens a world of possibilities
Rachel decided to embrace her stoma, and it became her ticket to freedom. She no longer lived in fear of unpredictable bowel issues. And, for the first time in years, she could confidently engage in various activities without constantly needing to be near a toilet. The stoma, tucked away and virtually invisible, allowed her to wear whatever she pleased and travel without constraints.
Rachel says her stoma has allowed her to regain her freedom and leave anxiety behind. She revels in the newfound joys of life. Swimming, beach outings, and even intimate moments are no longer sources of concern. Her confidence has soared, and she proudly shares her story with everyone she meets.
Rachel encourages others with ostomies not to despair. "Don't give up; change your mindset and just think of it as a new lease on life,” she says. “Imagine what you can do when you're not afraid to go anywhere!"
