The role of moisture in healthy skin

When you remove your ostomy barrier, cells from the outermost layer of skin are also removed with it. The loss of these protective cells allows more moisture from inside your body to escape into the environment. This is called transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Increased rates of water loss can make the skin more vulnerable to damage and peristomal skin complications.
